Automatic Custody in Proposed Laws

A new bill in the Family Law area was recently proposed in Iraq. The bill allows girls as young as nine to be married. It also states that when children reach the age of two, their fathers automatically gain full custody.

The Iraqi cabinet approved the bill and the Iraqi Parliament will now review it. It is possible that the bill will successfully make its way through the Iraqi Parliament. It is also possible that the upcoming Iraqi election on 30 April 2014 could result in the bill failing to progress through the legislative process.

Many people are speaking out against the proposed law. Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nation's representative to Iraq, tweeted that the bill "risks constitutionally protected rights for women and international commitment."
